The pineapple is a spiky, strange-looking fruit covered with scaly eye-looking bumps, which resembles a pinecone, hence its name.

You may not be drawn to pineapple because of its beauty, but the inside of this tasty fruit is full of surprises.

What can this fruit possibly offer, you ask? Let´s dive into the world of pineapple and discover its astounding hidden health benefits.

Origin

The home of the pineapple is South America, but today it is grown in tropical countries around the world. The pineapple´s name is a bit deceptive because it has nothing to do with pine cones (except for the look) or apples. Pineapple contains Bromelain, a very powerful enzyme that possesses a slew of health benefits that can boost your immune system. Bromelain´s chief characteristic is that it enables your body to make substances that fight pain and swelling.

Interesting Pineapple Facts

A pineapple reaches maturation in 3 years.

Once a pineapple is picked for harvest, the ripening process significantly slows down.

Pineapple is great as a meat tenderizer because Bromelain breaks down proteins.

From a botanical standpoint, a pineapple is actually a berry.

One pineapple plant produces only one pineapple per season.

The crown of the pineapple can be cut off and planted in the soil.

There are many different types of pineapples, but two of the most famous types are cayenne pineapple and red Spanish pineapple.

  1. I love pineapple and do eat it regularly when it is in season, but I never knew it has so many health benefits.

An Italian greengrocer told me many years ago the way to choose a pineapple is to try and pull out the most inner leave from the pineapple. If it easily comes out, it means the pineapple is very ripe, and you can immediately eat it. But if it doesn’t pull out, the pineapple will ripen later.

Fascinating to see that pineapple can also be used as a face mask and hair mask. Now that I know all the amazing health benefits of pineapple, I will certainly include it in my diet more.

    1. Thank you, Line, for sharing.

Yes, it is easy to love the smell and taste of pineapples. I especially enjoy the sweet ones.

Experts seem to have many ways of determining if a pineapple is ripe or not. Some of the ways to determine this, range from its color, scent, the leaf test which you described, and many more.

In many cultures, especially in some Asian countries, it is not unusual for women to use the local fruits as beauty treatments for hair and skin with noticeable and pleasant improvements.

Nature´s best (fruits, vegetables, and grains) offer us so much more than we know or think. Science backs up some health benefits, and others are still not clear. Still, science is exploring the other wonders we are not aware of yet; with further testing.
